Cheneil

A few kilometers away for Cervinia and Valtournenche, the Cheneil basin harbors a handful of buildings blessed with a spectacular 360-degree view of Mount Cervino and its surrounding peaks. This corner of paradise welcomes visitors with a breathtaking natural setting in which time appears to have stopped in its tracks. A borough of the Comune of Valtournenche, Cheneil is one of the few inhabited areas of the Aosta Valley not yet reachable by car. Here nature thrives unfettered, in all its wild beauty. At a whopping 2,105 meters above sea level, the town rests atop a diminutive plateau overlooked by the twin peaks of Grand and Petit Tournalin, Mount Roisetta, Becca Trecare and Becca d’Aran.

A must-see spot for visitors of the area is the “Grand Balcony”, a suggestive panoramic trail leading to Cervinia or, in the opposite direction, to Chamois and the lake of Lod. Equally charming is the recently installed panoramic elevator leading directly to Cheneil’s center: inaugurated in 2016, it can be used entirely free of charge 24 hours a day, with regular departures from La Barma (where travelers will find ample parking in which to leave their vehicles while visiting the car-free town).

Sitting like a small man-made crown atop a wild natural kingdom, Cheneil has historically drawn a number of notable names in mountain climbing, from Edward Whymper to Georges Carrel. The town’s center, which includes a hotel and a restaurant, is a prime example of centuries-old Alpine architecture. Thanks to its remarkable territorial and urban integrity, Cheneil has maintained an unaltered and unique charm: just what you need to lend your vacation in the unspoiled purity of the Cervino Valley an added touch of magic.
